any hints or tricks on keeping those crumbs, tiny hairs, etc off black suede mats without lifting the glass on and off 50 times?

1. Don't take the mat out until the day after you have cleaned the shop and changed the craft paper on the top of the work surface.
2. Temporarily turn off the HVAC.
3. Handle the mat minimally.
4. Vacuum the mat cutter.
5. Have the 3m 2" removable tape by your side.
6. Wear rubber gloves when assembling. They have a small amount of friction grip built in and can grab those nasty fishes.
Now I could tell you the story about the day the tiny red spiders invaded the gallery on the day we were working on a crescent whisper colored mat. We had enough mat for two tries and the project was due the next day. Need I go on?
Happy matting!
I like your sign on name Pogo. Where are you from?

Turning off the AC may be a viable option in temperate climes, but if it gets turned off, even for a short length of time, on a hot day down here it never gets caught back up and everybody has to suffer the rest of the day. I guess you could come in early, like around 4, and work while the system had some cycle time.
If that doesn't work, try using a solder sucker with a short piece of surgical tubing on the end so you don't have to disassemble the entire frame and give extra invasion time for more little miscreants.
Seriously! heheheh
And no, I don't know the official tool name of the durned things; check with an electronics store where they're always soldering little electronic gizmos.
What I like about them is that you trigger it only when you position it next to the creepy-crawly. It's helpful to cut the end of the surgical tubing at an angle.

And don't forget to "dust seal" the whole package (around the edge of the glass) once you have it spotless...!

I use a long screwdriver with masking tape reverse-wound around the tip to fish out those little nasties.
