The most common way to support a weighty item in an undersized frame is to add a strainer behind the mounting the same size as the mounting board. It is made from raw wood 5cm x 2.5 cm and is firmly nailed in place and or atached with screws. As for the sword and case, I would attach them with wire coated with something like shrink wrap tubing to prevent scratching. The shrink wrap tubing can be found in an electronics store.

Once again I would refer you to rare earth magnets available from Lee Valley Tools. These can be hidden in the mounts or perhaps in the scabards and will easily hold the 4 pounds of this project. A magnet 1/2 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch thick will lift 9 pounds. Lee Valley sells them in various shapes including rings and rods. They also sell steel cups for mounting them. The swords will be easily removable should the customer wish.

Scarfinger doesn't do justice to the strength of the magnets of which he speaks. These are the mother of all magnets. One was bought recently for a job on our wheat ranch, and none of us could pull it off--only by sliding it sideways could we remove it, barely. You won't want one that strong, however, you will be able rest assured these things will hold what you want them to hold.

My framer made an interesting comment.
Don't magnets lose strength over time???

Not if they have some metal in their field to keep them working. I have a magnetic tool holder by my work bench which holds screwdrivers, rules, tape measures etc and its been there for about 30 years.

To hold the swords make a wooden mount with a small ridge to stop the sword from slipping down. Drill a hole just deep enough for the magnet's holder which is held with a small screw, drop in the magnet and cover with suede, flock, or paint.

Order a Lee Valley Catalog for 5 dollars - you won't be sorry. And they give you a 5 dollar credit on your first order. There is a lot of information on magnets in the catalog.

I agree...It's my favorite catalog and the supplements seem to come along with a new tool that is just what I didn't know I was looking for.
