We recently received in our shop a piece about 15 x 30 inches of what had been green velvet with brass and silver cut out Arabic
( I think) sayings glued to the velvet. The velvet was stained and in poor repair, and was glued (fastened) to some sort of masonite type board. We want to remove the letters (sayings) from the velvet and refasten them to green suede
matboard. We have soaked it with water, though we did not yet completely immerse it in water. The letters do not seem to be loosening at all. Has anyone had any experience with something like this?? And once we do get them removed, how should we refasten them to our suede matboard. Our customer has told us that the people who made it are not very technically inclined and that the glue used is probably not a modern adhesive. I think the customer is Egyptian, and he tells me that these are saying from the Koran.

I would think that you should be able to pull the velvet off the old board, even if you have to rip it off in pieces. Then you can pull it from the backs of the metal pieces, at least enough so that it doesn't show from the front, if you cannot remove the residue entirely. Then perhaps stitching would be appropriate to re-secure them on the new suede board. Good luck! And welcome to the Grumble!
