What's the deal with the 'guests'? Are they lurkers? Just curious.

I'm guessing "guests" is a more polite term for "lurkers," or "unregistered visitors." At any rate, welcome, guests. I hope you decide to introduce yourselves, stay awhile and make yourselves at home.

Quite rightfully asked question. What to make of "guests"? Are they with the FBI, IRS or INS ;) ?
And then how do yo feel about having your presence ring-belled onto the home page and your screen name be greeted as soon as you enter the room? I used to appreciate the quiet and intimate way of roaming through the G. I detest to be reminded the embarrassing truth that once you enter the internet is like using a bathroom with transparent walls: there are ways to be cookied, scanned down, recognized, clasified, have your computer archive searched, be bugged... And I don't mean to say that Framer is interested in more than having the G running smoothly and friendly. But not even Framer would deny that technically all those threats are valid and inevitable concernes and his newlly added gadgets are all painful reminders of how insecure and vulnerable net surfers really are.

With many of the new features come new options for shutting them off in your profile settings. For example, you can specify that you don't want other Grumblers to see you in the list of recent visitors.

You would also show up as a guest if not logged in. There is also a delay in posting you as it's only updated every 5 minutes.

Being greeted could be a good thing or a bad thing. I'm not sure I like being reminded that I should be working instead of checking out "who said what". But then again, maybe it will make me realize how much time I sometimes spend here.

Must one actually "log in"? I neither "in" nor "out." Are we supposed to? (Actually, this writer is beginning to sink into the bog of options/opt-in's 'n outs/eccentricities/tricks and tips of the entire computer world. Spam, telemarketers and all the rest are depriving me of the fun it used to be. Sigh. Hope the enthusiasm returns soon.)

MM,
No need to log in or out if: </font> Your cookies are set to remember your log-in name and password - You'll know this is true if you are able to post without manually logging in </font> You're the only one using a particular computer to post to The Grumble - If I were still using the same computer as my daughter, for example, and failed to log out before she posted, I might find my name on one of her posts. That would be bad. Also, she could, in theory, go to my profile and change my password, which would be more than bad. Of course, The Diva would never do that, though I have done it to her several times.</font> (Instant Graemlins seem to be working just fine.)

I'd like to propose that questions or comments about the inner workings and features of the "new" Grumble be posted to the tech forum. That forum could use the traffic and that would free up the main Grumble forum for matters of framing. Make sense?

Got my vote on that one.

Merps, top of page, click on my profile, click view/update profile and at the bottom of the page check yes and now you are a guest. Not everything unrelated to framing needs to go elsewhere!! ;)
