I have a customer who would like a light on the wall over a painting I framed for him. He would like it battery powered with a remote control. Any ideas on a source for such a light??

Howard,

Welcome to the Grumble.

You could try House of Troy in Vermont. They have battery operated lights, although I don't know about the remote control.

Their phone # is 800-428-5367.

Good Luck.

I have done quite a bit of home automation (lights, security, etc) and I haven't heard of such a thing. Lose the battery part and there are a lot of solutions using x10 and remotes. Go to www.smarthome.com (http://www.smarthome.com) and take a look. If it exists, they would have it.

Forget the battery. Batteries are OK for a flashlight, but impractical for illuminating a picture. The rechargeable batteries go dim after about 6 hours when new, and deteriorate after what seems like only a few charge cycles. They don't put out much light, and they are expensive.

Hard wired lights are much better. A recessed receptical can be installed behind the frame location, to plug in an ordinary picture light.

You could recommend a ceiling mounted light (track or recessed "eyeball"). Some of them are made for very accurate adjustment of the illuminated area, very similar to the lighting used in museums.

The electrical contractor can install a remote control sensor at the same time, which is the same kind of device used to activate interior lighting from your garage door opener.
