A customer brought in a printers plate made from aluminum. Wants it put in a frame with a double mat (fortunatley not floated).

What's the best way to mount??? Conservation is not an issue although I like to subscribe to the "do no harm" rule as much as possible.

Thanks

I would use a sink mat on it.

Jo's suggestion of a sink is an excellent idea.
All metal items are chemically sensitive and should be handled with gloves. The window mat
that will cover the edges of the plate and hold
it in the sink, can, itself be held in place with
strips of linen tape that are afixed to the back
of the window and which can be pulled through
slits in the back mat so that they can be taped
to the back of the back mat. This allows the
window to stay shut without gluing it shut;
an option that makes it hard to open in the future.

I have mounted a number of these flat printing plates for World Color Press (Quebecor) for presentation to their new editors and publishers. They wanted a classy looking&nbsp framing with no regards to conservation of the plates. I found that using 2 or 3 layers of Fusion 4000 held them in place pretty well (Yes, hot mount in the vacuum press). I know that there will be arguements to this method but you eventually will do what the customer is wanting done and is willing to pay for, eh??

Wait until you get a plate in from a rotogravure press!! Now there is a challenge for mounting!

Are you matting around the whole sheet or just one article on the sheet?

I've done a couple of these where they just wanted the article. It worked out so that I cut the opening in the mat and placed the mat on the sheet and then cut the sheet to the outside edges of the mat. This sheet cut pretty easy with my straight mat cutter.

Watch those sharp edges!!

Good luck.

I'm mounting the whole thing since it's only one article with a picture of the newly remodled theater at the local college. It's about 11 X 17 and is going to hang in the lobby of the theater. If they like it, they may have two more done for the Contractor and Architect.

I didn't even think of using a sink mat, thanks.

That's why The Grumble is so valuable for us rookies.
