View Full Version : drymounting a silk handkerchief

Recently had a big argument in the shop about drymounting a silk handkerchief. Conservation was not an issue, but I thought that the silk could shift, and it was a one time shot to top mount and get it right. aThe next thing I thought, was this is a Hermes handkerchief, and should it get ruined, expensive to replace. We went round the pritt glueing it, corners of drymount tissue and a tacking iron, and I said, no, it needs to be sewn, if not on fabric stretcher, than on to the matboard they selected. I have not been in this business a year and change, to let something go by that I see as obviously fatal. And I will not play shop politics, and give in to sub human framing practices. Am I wrong here, or could a better sales pitch from our design center been given ahead of time? Thanks for any advice in this matter

Hate to trash someone else's framing ideas, but you're right in this case. I look at it as the Hypocratic oath: not doing harm. Do nothing irreversible when in doubt. (Even when NOT in doubt.) Sew it, do the f/c fallout thing with either tension or pins, then mat it, but don't under any circumstances hurt it. Good unya.
P.S. Sounds to me like you have more sense at one year than most.

I completely agree with MM and just as an added reason your previous thoughts are probaly also right.
I have seen some cross stitch that was vacumed down and it did just what you were afraid of .It moved in the press ,and it is much stiffer then your handkercief .Needless to say even if it was totally without value it looked horrible and couldn't easily be repositioned. That makes it totaly unacceptable not to mention the bad reputation that piece gave the jack -leg that did it.
NUFF-SAID???

Rebecca,
Trying to drymount a silk Handkerchief is pretty Goofy, IMO. Sounds like you've got a lot more smarts than the people you work with . . .

I wish Rebecca lived closer and would respond to my post on the job board!
