Customer has brought in a large decorative sword to be framed in a shadowbox type frame. Have done this before without problem. Trouble is, she wants this framed without glass and in such a way that the sword can be taken out at will. (I think it's for her son and he thinks he's Robin Hood or King Arthur) Anyway, any suggesting on how to secure it? It will habg horizontally on a marboard background.

Is this sword in a scabard? If so you can sew the scabard to the mat and put an angle block behind it to allow the sword to be pulled. They also make several forms of sword hangers which the sword just rests on. This way the sword is in no way attached and you have just made a decrotive box to hang on the wall around the sword.

No scabbard. Where can you get the "hangers"?

For magnetic items such as swords that the customer wants to be able to remove from the mount try rare earth magnets glued into mount blocks and covered with felt. These little magnets of three quarters of an inch diameter and one quarter of an inch thick will hold ten to twenty pounds. Lee Valley tools sells them in a number of sizes and shapes.

Any knife shop should have them.

Just an update for future reference. Found a local shop that specializes in swords, of all things. For $16 bought a set of brass holders. Three pieces. A loop piece that covers the pointed end and two "bar" type pieces that hold the hilt in two places. The pieces screw permanently into the backboard with the brass pieces screwing off to release the sword. Its really quite simple.

Woody, would you mind telling what and where this store is?
