After reading and using the "GREAT" feedback on "THE GRUMBLE",I am in need of some professional opinions. I have just rented some new space after 27 years in one location. The new location is just blocks away from the old, same phone #'s, etc etc.My question is layout of the new place. The space is 35'wide and 100'deep with one partition wall about 2/3rds in from the storefront.Of course the chopper, matcutter, compressor and vacumount press need to go somewhere! Your help is greatly appreciated. Jim

One of those hanging jobbies from the ceiling with all of your tools just above the work table would be nice. Seems with 20' you could hang a lot there.

Try PFM on line and see if they have store guides in the archives.

Make sure everything is easily moveable and make adjustments so the work flows for you.

What a BIG QUESTION!!!!

Make a list of all the concepts you like and dislike about your present space. Then make a wish list of how perfect it would be in the next space. Think about traffic flow and work flow. Of course, don't forget storage. Then multiply the customer finished and inhouse framing storage by two. Think about the best use of your walls. Think about dust and dirt from operations and then think of a way to segregate them.

Join the PPFA. Get a book on frameshop design. Think about functional work centers. Talk to you reps. Think about who will come in the front door and the back door. Where will the computer go. Do you need a second computer. What if business grows where will you...etc.

AL oh for goodness sakes!
Give a poor guy a break. Here I am trying to decide if I have to have a computer or not a the shop (already have 3 at home) and on the very same day you start talking about a second computer.
That spinning head is mine.

I have been trying to find a 20 foot ceiling for years. I would like to highlight parts of the storefront by having them at different levels. I saw a gallery once that had the print displays on a deck about 3 feet above floor level. There were stairs in 2 places and a nice little fence along the edge. It was nicely built in a teak like finish and seemed to draw people to it. And it had another advantage. I have found that young children can cause a lot of damage in print bins and flashers but these few stairs seemed to stop them. When I talked to the owner he told me the children issue was his main reason for raising this area. Between the floor and the deck he had framed art with protective corners about 6 deep leaning against the deck. These were on little platforms to keep them a few inches off the floor and to stop feet from damaging them. he had other raised areas and I thought his store was one of the most customer friendly I have seen. And with a 20 foot ceiling who could resist a mezzanine office to look down on your domain(and catch shoplifters).

Hi AL,
Sort of, The NET part is a breeze but that WORK bit always gives me trouble.

I guess you've grown out of that kindergarden problem or you would not be helping the likes of me on this board. (Do appreciate all help by the way)

Yes we're about 16 hours ahead and about 20 years behind

Terry.

Before planning multi level floor layouts check with your local code as to where and when the BARRIER FREE ACCESS rules go into effect. The National BOCA Code will not allow multilevel floors without free access to handicaped individuals Either via a ramp or and elevator. A major buildout will probally activate these code rules
