I wasn't sure whether to post this on Warped or on Business, but you know me....

My son, who as an apprentice pipe-fitter, has to belong to the union, got a kick out of seeing the "Picture Frame and Moulding Worker's Union" poster (Local 18B, no less!) in this month's PFM. (Last page, "Time Frame" article." )

It's a pretty interesting article on where we've been, where we come from, and where we might be headed.

It is amazing to me that an independant bunch as framers typically are would ever even start a union. It doesn't surprise me that it is no more.

Betty, it was probably a union for the people who turned raw wood into picture frame moulding. Unfortunately, alot of those jobs have gone overseas. :(

Unfortunately, alot of those jobs have gone overseas. To Scotland, mostly.

No. You gotta read the article. It's really good.

I agree that the shop was probally woodworkers (operators of production milling equipment).

On a whim, I looked into the AFL-CIO website. There was no reference to picture framers or even gilders. Even in the painters union affiliate. There was also no reference to gold leaf in the painters union internal search engine.

I tell ya, you gotta read the article. (I can't type well enough, or I'd just post it for you...)

This union was associated with the upholstrers union. It was the method of teaching new framers before there were classes and schools.

It was not millwrights.
