Painting a Finished Frame

Hello, I am looking for some suggestions. I am trying to paint a finished frame, my supplier did not have it in the color that I needed. Now I am trying to decide how to approach painting it. I have heard of some framers spray painting the frame the color they need, but I wasn't sure if that was the best way. Any Suggestions? graemlins/shrug.gif

I've repainted a few different finished frames and have had success when I:
- primed with a high-adhesive primer (usually I give the frame a light sanding first)
- painted the frame with an acrylic craft paint
- applied a "matte" water-based varnish to protect the paint.

I've done this with a distressed wood moulding which was brown and I wanted it black with grey highlights; also on a shadowbox moulding that was silver but had a yellow overtone to it which I didn't like.

I'm sure that there are other ways to refinish a 'finished' frame, but this worked for me.

What frame are you painting? Do you want a matte, lacquer, furniture finish, or maybe satin? It depends on the present finish of the frame as to what I'd advise.
